For a few decades, Mott Haven has been known for being one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Country. More than half of the population lives below the poverty line. They do, however, received help from several social programs both National and from the City. The neighborhood has the highest concentration of Puerto Ricans in all of New York City. Also, there is a growing African-American and Central-American community. More than half of the populace resides in low-income residential units administered by the NYCHA.
The area that is Mott Haven today was a part of the massive Morrisania Manor, the estate of the Morris Family. The land was later bought by Jordan Mott, from whom was named after. Public transportation is not an issue for the residents of this NYC neighborhood. The MTA Regional Bus Operations has eleven bus lines serving the community, and also, the NYC Subway System has seven stations serving Mott Haven.
