This town covers a total area of about 6.5 square miles of surface, according to data provided by the United States Census Bureau. There is a narrow, long and low isthmus called Asharoken itself that together with a part of Eatons Neck enclose the boundaries of the town, separating Northport Bay from Long Island Sound and connecting Eaton’s Neck in the northwest with Northport in the Southeast.
The name of the town of Asharoken was designated in honor of the head of the Native American tribe Matinecocks, better known as Chief Asharoken, who since before the English assents, inhabited the area. In 1656, European settlers bought the land of Northport, Asharoken and Eatons Neck from the chief Asharoken. One of the largest county owners and Northport lawyer, William Codling, began marketing a development called Asharoken Beach in the early 20th century. Over the years this town has become for upper-class families in an excellent place to enjoy the summer.
