Downtown Brooklyn forms the borough of Brooklyn from New York City in the United States, specifically established in the northeastern part of the district. The area has been transforming since 2004 with the rezoning of Downtown Brooklyn, investing $300 million in ongoing public improvements and $9 billion in private investment. The area has become an excellent and growing center for education. In 2017, an announcement made by New York University that it would invest more than $500 million for the expansion and renovation of both the New York University Tandon School of Engineering and its respective campus in Downtown Brooklyn.
Gentrification in nearby neighborhoods began with the rezoning of Downtown Brooklyn in March 2012. However, before this, affordable housing had already been created in the area since 2004. By 2014 some 420 affordable units were already available to residents. Also since 2004, the income of the hotel industry in the area had tripled thanks to the increase in housing in the area, thus benefiting the economy of Downtown Brooklyn.
