Situated in the southwestern portion of Queens, one of the boroughs of New York City lies Howard Beach, a suburban, working-class neighborhood located between John F. Kennedy Airport and Brooklyn. It is mostly a residential community, with mostly low-rise single-family units. Together with Ozone Park, Lindenwood, Tudor Village, and Richmond Hill make up the Queens Community Board 10. The Officers of the New York City Police Department’s 106th Precinct patrols the community. In the political sphere, the 32nd District of the New York City Council represents Howard Beach. It offers a peaceful, suburban atmosphere to its residents with detached homes, front lawns, garages, and tree-lined streets.

Howard Beach has a population of approximately 27.000 with a predominantly white demographic. ZIP code is 11411. Along with Ozone Park, it has one of the highest percentages of high school graduations, exceeding the City’s average. The Queens Public Library operates a branch in the neighborhood, at 156th Avenue. Public transportation is not a problem for students and commuters from Howard Beach have access to the NYC Subway system through the Howard Beach-JFK Airport station. Additionally, the MTA Bus company has five bus lines and four express buses serving the community.

Among its notable residents, are the infamous John Gotti, head of the Gambino crime family and Victoria Gotti his daughter. The neighborhood was shown in a made for TV movie in 1989 depicting a racial incident from 1986 titled Howard Beach: Making a Case for Murder. Another interesting fact about Howard Beach is the fact that it doesn’t have a sandy beach, the waterfront is made of mostly marshlands along Jamaica Bay.
