Co-op City located geographically northwest of New York City in the Baychester neighborhood of the Bronx district. Cooperative City is the most extensive cooperative apartment housing development ever built in the world, with approximately 43,752 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census. To the north, west and southwest are bordered by Interstate 95, and to the southeast by the Hutchinson River Parkway. The land, before being occupied by Freedomland U.S.A., an amusement park between 1960 and 1964, was formerly a swamp.
The first residents moved into the first apartments two years after construction began in 1966. However, the construction and development of the complex continued until 1973. The cooperative housing development was made possible by a mortgage loan from the New York State Housing Finance Agency, which financed the entire project. On the other hand, the United Housing Foundation sponsored the construction of the community. The neighborhood located within the Bronx Community District 10, whose assigned postal service number is 10475. Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay Park, and City Island are some of the attractions located near the complex.
Co-op City comprised of 15,372 residential units spanning 320 acres. It has seven groups of townhouses and 35 high-rise buildings that occupy 20% of the land developed in homes, leaving extensive green spaces. The average number of floors of apartment buildings is between 24 and 33 floors high. Each group of buildings identified by numbers and there are four types, the Chevron of 414 apartments per building, the Triple Core of 500 units, the Tower of 414 units also but of 33 floors, and the Town House composed by 236 houses.
