Dutch Kills hasn’t stayed behind of the gentrification process currently spreading across Long Island City, with an increase of residential areas, waterfront parks, and one of the most thriving art community of the entire borough. The combined population is of little over 20.000, with a highly mixed racial makeup, making it one of the most diverse communities in all of Queens. Dutch Kills began as a hamlet, the name comes from the navigable tributary along Newtown Creek, nowadays is the subway station Queensboro Plaza. During the revolutionary war, Dutch Kills was a major road hub and a military outpost for the British army from 1776 to 1783. During the 1800s the community was divided into farming lands until the industralization of NYC during the early 1900s and the canalization of Newtown Creek. Today, Dutch Kills in undergoing a massive rezoning project with a particular increase in residential and commercial properties.
