Situated in the South Bronx section of the New York City borough of the Bronx lies the residential, commercial, and industrial neighborhood of Woodstock. It is bounded by Melrose, South Bronx, East 149th Street, the Bruckner Expressway, Forest Houses, 3rd Avenue, East 163 Street, and Bruckner Boulevard. Woodstock and the fellow neighborhoods of Morrisania, Crotona Park East, Melrose, Claremont, and Concourse Village belong to the Bronx Community Board 3, and its ZIP codes are 10456 and 10459. The neighborhood is patrolled by the capable police force over at the 42nd Precinct of the New York City Police Department. Woodstock was named after the novel of the same name written by Sir Walter Scott by 1860s surveyor Andrew Findlay, who named the neighborhood of Melrose after another of Scott’s novels.
Woodstock has a population of approximately 14.000 with a predominantly Hispanic and Latino demographic, although some important African-American communities are residing in the neighborhood, as well as a longstanding Italian-American populace. Woodstock is also home to one of the most recognizable Landmark Building in New York City, one of the nine libraries commissioned by Andrew Carnegie. Currently, the Library is administered by the New York City Public Library system.
The neighborhood has had its fair share of bad days and good days. However, thanks to on-point local policies and active police patrolling, living in Woodstock now is so much different than it was a few decades ago.
