South Jamaica Queens, NY Private Investigator and Process Server

South Jamaica is a residential neighborhood located south of central Jamaica in the municipality of Queens in New York City. Also known as the Southside.

Although no official border is recognized, the neighborhood is a subsection of the metropolitan area of Jamaica bounded by the Long Island, Jamaica Avenue, or Liberty Avenue mainline railroad tracks to the north; the Van Wyck Expressway to the west; Rockaway Boulevard to the south; and Merrick Boulevard to the east.

Other major roads in South Jamaica include Baisley, Foch, Linden and Sutphin Boulevards.

Although today it is a good place to live, at the beginning of the 20th century it was considered a marginal neighborhood.

The South Jamaica Postal Service serves under the zip codes 11434 and 11436. It belongs to the Queens 12 Community District.

Its etymology is quite curious, the name of Jamaica comes from the word “Yameco” which means “beaver” and its origin is that Beaver Pond is the border between Jamaica and South Jamaica.

It was also was known as Cedar Manor throughout the 20th century.

During the 19th century, the entire territory of Jamaica was covered by farmland.

The first developments in the area were Prospect and St. Monica’s Churches opened in 1857.

In 1852 the Williamsburg Water Works Company acquired the Baisley Pond, which was created by local farmers from dammed streams to supply water to the municipality.

It currently has a population of about 30,000 people and its zip codes are 11434, 11435 and 11436.
